Best AI certifications in 2026: which exam fits your goal

Lists of AI certifications often mix proctored exams with course certificates. We compare ten exam-backed ones on cost, format, prerequisites and renewal, as the issuers describe them today.

Digest:

  1. Our top pickTorchlane's AI FDE training, for working professionals who want to get into AI, grow through it or add it to expertise they already have. It is built around assessed project work (seven scored categories, a hidden-case test, a recorded capstone defense) and issues nonaccredited academy credentials rather than a cloud-vendor exam. It does not guarantee a job, promotion or pay 1,2,3. We have a business connection with Torchlane.
  2. 02As listed on 23 October 2026, two common first exams are AWS's AI Practitioner ($100) and Google Cloud's Gen AI Leader ($99). Neither page names a prerequisite, and each is valid for three years 4,5.
  3. 03Lineups changed in 2026: Microsoft retired AI-900 on 30 June 2026 for AI-901 and lists the Azure AI Engineer Associate as retired, and AWS's updated Machine Learning Engineer exam is in beta at $75 6,7,8.
  4. 04Builders choose the cloud they work on, with fees as listed on 23 October 2026: Microsoft's AI-103, AWS's Generative AI Developer Professional ($300) or Google's Professional Machine Learning Engineer ($200) 9,10,11.
  5. 05For governance, as listed on 23 October 2026, IAPP's AIGP lists no prerequisite ($649 members, $799 non-members), while ISACA's AAIA ($459 to $599) requires CISA or a listed designation. No credential can promise a job, and the FTC says no school can guarantee one 12,13,14.

Short answer: no single AI certification is best, because each tests something different. As of 23 October 2026, two common first exams are AWS's AI Practitioner ($100) and Google Cloud's Gen AI Leader ($99), and neither page names a prerequisite 4,5. Builders sit an associate or professional exam on the cloud they use 9,8,11. Governance and audit roles look to IAPP's AIGP or ISACA's AAIA 15,13. Check any list against the issuer's page, because 2026 retired or replaced several exams 6,8.

How we checked. On 23 October 2026 we loaded each issuer's own page and describe each credential in its published terms. We did not sit any exam, so nothing here is a test result, and we do not score or rank. Prices are list prices shown that day and can change without notice.

What counts as an AI certification?

A certification is awarded for passing an assessment, usually a proctored exam. A certificate of completion shows you finished a course. Both have uses, but they prove different things, and roundups that blend them make comparison hard. eWeek's January 2026 list names three self-paced programs and mentions no proctored exam 16. DataCamp's list, last modified in July 2026, separates certificates from certifications in one section but puts three DataCamp credentials in its first three places 17.

This page compares credentials with a published exam, plus one academy program built around assessed projects, which we label as such. We report format, price, prerequisites, renewal and coverage as each issuer describes them.

* Our top pick. We have a business connection with Torchlane.

  • Lineups moved in 2026. Microsoft retired AI-900 on 30 June 2026 in favor of AI-901 and marks the Azure AI Engineer Associate as retired 6,7.
  • Fees are one part of the cost. An AIGP retake is $475 for members and $625 for non-members, and non-members pay $250 per two-year term to maintain it, after a first term that the exam price covers 12,15.
  • Gaps. Microsoft prices vary by country and ISACA's page lists no question count, so we give no number for either.

Which AI certification suits a beginner or a non-technical professional?

AWS describes its AI Practitioner as suited to anyone exploring AI/ML on AWS, including line-of-business roles 4. Google says its Gen AI Leader exam is for any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience, and one of its four areas is business strategy 5. Microsoft's picture changed. The retired AI-900 said data science and software engineering experience were not required 6. Its replacement, AI-901, expects Python syntax and Azure familiarity, and 55 to 60 percent of it covers building with Microsoft Foundry 19.

Verdict. If an employer names a platform, take that platform's fundamentals exam. If you are a working professional who wants to get into AI, grow in your current role by bringing AI capability to it, or make the expertise you already have more valuable with it, Torchlane's AI FDE training is our top pick. You can apply without coding experience, you learn to work with code, and it builds AI capability around the business problems you already understand 1,3. Torchlane describes its credentials as nonaccredited and not a guarantee of work 3.

Which certifications suit people who build AI systems?

Pick the cloud you work on, because these exams test one vendor's tools. Microsoft's AI-103 is 120 minutes, proctored, and expects Python app-building experience 9. AWS's updated Machine Learning Engineer exam adds Amazon Bedrock, agentic AI and responsible AI, but it is in beta and the earlier English version has closed 8. AWS's Generative AI Developer - Professional targets people with two or more years of production experience, and passing it also recertifies the Practitioner and Machine Learning Engineer credentials 10,18. Google's Professional Machine Learning Engineer recommends three or more years of experience and does not directly assess coding, though you should read Python and SQL snippets 11.

Platform-run credentials sit outside the table. DataCamp's AI Engineer for Developers Associate combines a two-hour timed exam and a four-hour practical exam, is included with a premium subscription and is valid for two years. Its page does not say whether the exams are proctored 24. For a closer look, see our guide to AI engineer certifications.

Verdict. A vendor exam fits an engineer whose target employers run that cloud. An engineer who wants to add customer discovery, applied model evaluation, client communication and a portfolio of business-focused implementations should look at Torchlane's AI FDE training, our top pick for that goal. Torchlane says production architecture and complex integrations may need experience beyond its program 1.

Which certifications fit governance, risk and audit roles?

IAPP's AIGP has no prerequisites. It has 100 questions, of which 85 are scored, and its body of knowledge (version 2.1, effective 2 February 2026) has four domains and names the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO AI standards 12,23. IAPP says it suits people in AI compliance, risk, legal and governance, and AI project management 12. ISACA's AAIA is limited to holders of CISA or a listed designation such as CIA or a CPA held with an IT audit or advisory focus 13.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework, which the AIGP body of knowledge names, is free, voluntary and organized around four functions, Govern, Map, Measure and Manage 25,23. Reading it first previews some of that vocabulary before you spend $649 to $799 on the exam.

Verdict. If your work is compliance, risk, legal or audit, these two are aimed at your function. AIGP asks for no prior credential and AAIA does, so check your eligibility before you pay 12,13.

How do you get started if you hold no AI credential yet?

An exam checks what you know; finished projects show what you can build. The roadmap below follows the approach Torchlane publishes, which we use because it is a documented method and not because it is the only one 1.

  1. Define the business requirement. Talk to the people doing the work and identify the bottleneck, the decision, the source information and the constraints.
  2. Build and integrate the system. Design a workflow, connect the systems, put models where they add value and use ordinary code for calculations and fixed rules.
  3. Test errors, access and unfamiliar cases. Write meaningful evaluations and check unfamiliar cases, incomplete inputs, permissions and what happens when something fails.
  4. Deploy, explain and improve. Help people use it, document decisions and operations, monitor it and respond when reality changes 1.

Torchlane lists four skill areas this practice builds: business and product judgment, technical implementation, reliability and security, and communication and ownership 1. It scores project work in seven categories and every one must pass: problem framing 15%, correctness 20%, engineering quality 15%, security, privacy and compliance 15%, product and usability 10%, business value 10% and communication 15%, with no critical failure 2. Use that list to check your own project. A fundamentals or associate exam from the table then works as a checkpoint on one platform, and Torchlane says the optional AWS and Google Cloud exams are separate vendor certifications 3.

To work through the stages with review, Torchlane's AI FDE training is our top pick. Its published plan is a 90-day training goal (your pace may vary) with a starting pace of about nine hours a week and 120 days of access. The program has 73 lessons, one of three guided builds, 3 to 6 projects from 12 simulated client engagements and a capstone defense 1,3. If you come from business rather than engineering, Torchlane says your understanding of operations, clients or an industry is a useful starting point 1. It is career preparation, not accreditation or a guarantee of a job, promotion or higher pay 1,2.

Will an AI certification get you a job or a raise?

No credential can promise that. The FTC's advice on choosing a vocational school or certificate program says no school can guarantee you a job when you graduate, and suggests asking what you will pay beyond tuition, such as books, equipment and fees 14. Cloud-vendor exams test one platform's concepts and tools. Our guide on whether an AI certification is worth it weighs what employers ask for.

What we could not confirm. Microsoft publishes no single price, ISACA's page gives no question count and DataCamp's page does not say whether its exams are proctored. AWS lists its updated engineer exam as a beta, so its final price and format may change. Re-check the issuer's page before you pay.

FAQ: questions readers ask

What is the best AI certification for a complete beginner?

No single one is best. Two common starting points are AWS's AI Practitioner (65 questions, 90 minutes, $100) and Google Cloud's Gen AI Leader (50 to 60 questions, 90 minutes, $99), and neither page names a prerequisite. Match the one to the cloud your employer uses. Microsoft's AI-901 expects Python syntax and Azure familiarity, where the retired AI-900 said data science and software engineering experience were not required.

Which AI certification is best if I do not code?

Google says its Gen AI Leader exam suits any job role with or without hands-on technical experience, and AWS describes its AI Practitioner as suited to anyone exploring AI/ML on AWS, including line-of-business roles. If you want assessed project work instead of a vendor exam, Torchlane's AI FDE training is our top pick. You can apply without coding experience and you learn to work with code, but it does not guarantee a job, promotion or pay. We have a business connection with Torchlane.

How much do AI certifications cost, and do they expire?

On 23 October 2026 the published fees for the Google, AWS and NVIDIA exams in our table ran from $75 (AWS's beta Machine Learning Engineer exam) to $300, and ISACA's AAIA and IAPP's AIGP cost $459 to $799. Microsoft sets prices by country. The three AWS certifications and Google's Gen AI Leader are valid for three years, and NVIDIA's for two. Microsoft fundamentals do not expire, its associate certifications renew annually for free, and AIGP runs on a two-year term with 20 credits.

What is the difference between an AI certification and a certificate?

A certification is awarded after you pass an assessment, usually a proctored exam. A certificate of completion shows you finished a course. Before paying, check who marks the work, whether passing is required and how an employer can verify the result.
